How to Choose the Type of Archery Arrow

How to Choose the Type of Archery Arrow

Types of Arrows

What kind of archery arrow do I need?  There are several different types of archery arrow shafts to choose from and some of the advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed below.

Aluminum

Aluminum shafts are affordable, accurate, and fast.  They are a good choice for both beginner and experienced archery hunters.  This type of arrow can be manufactured more consistently than both wooden and fiberglass arrows.  Due to the fact that these arrows can be consistently manufactured, the hunter can buy additional arrow shafts that match up with the original arrow shafts.  Aluminum shafts can be manufactured in a range of sizes and in different types of aluminum alloys.  The arrow shaft is durable and the arrow tips can be replaced as necessary.  The accuracy, speed, and consistency make aluminum shafts a popular choice.

Carbon

Carbon arrow shafts are lightweight, fast, and durable.  These arrow shafts are smaller in diameter than aluminum shafts.  Due to the smaller diameter, tuning is important to ensure accurate flight.  Carbon arrows are more expensive than aluminum arrows but are durable and may last longer than aluminum shafts.

Aluminum Carbon

These types of arrows are made of an aluminum core with a carbon coat. This type of arrow is smaller and lighter than pure aluminum arrows, making them fly faster.  These arrows are typically used by archers who shoot long distances outdoors.  The aluminum provides straightness and the carbon provides durability.  However, aluminum carbon arrow shafts may break down if struck and can still bend.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass arrows are more durable than wooden arrows but are brittle and can break easily.  This type of archery shaft can be produced in a variety of sizes and can be fitted to various draw lengths and weight.  This type of arrow is not as widely used as aluminum and carbon arrows.

Wood

Wooden arrows are inexpensive and a good choice for the beginner archery hunter and for target practice.  However, they are prone to warping over time, breaking, and flaws.  Some wooded arrows are made from compressed cedar, which are stronger and resist warping.  Wooden arrow shafts are inexpensive and good for the traditional or beginner archery hunter.

Each type of archery arrow shaft has advantages and disadvantages.  Decide what characteristics are most important to you when hunting and choose the best arrow that you can afford.
